The Thatcher:

Ronan Finn is a qualified Thatcher with a Construction Background in Carpentry and Roofing working from Galway in the West of Ireland.

Ronan’s interest in this age old craft started in 1997 when he worked as an apprentice for a Dutch Thatcher for 7 months. When the project finished Ronan moved into Carpentry where he worked for the next 10 years as a Roofer, building and covering roofs.

In 2008 Ronan secured a place on a FÁS Thatcher Traineeship in Co. Galway, which provided training in practical, theoretical and technical knowledge in Traditional Reed and Straw Thatching. The course covered new builds and recoating in both reed and straw.

In 2009, Ronan started working a three day block release with Paul Johnson a Thatcher in the Galway area and after his training with FÁS Ronan continued to served his time with the same Thatcher working on roofs in County Galway and on various projects such as Bridget’s Gardens and Moran’s of the Weir.

Ronan has a strong understanding of traditional thatching methods and he enjoys the hands-on aspect of thatching a roof and the satisfaction that this brings.
