It is increasingly difficult to get insurance on a thatched building here in Ireland. There are very few companies that will insure thatches in Ireland. I have added a few companies on my links page.
Some companies may have conditions which would have to be adhered to in order to obtain insurance, e.g.: smoke alarms, fire extinguishers, chimney in good state of repair and regular cleaning. Chimney’s lined. Employing guidelines from my section on fireproofing may help with insurance.
You may be eligible for a grant to re-thatch or repair your roof. Contact your local authorities to find out.
If your dwelling is a protected structure you may qualify for a grant from the Heritage Council (see links page).
The Department of Environment can offer grants for owner-occupied houses, either for the cost of repair or renovating a thatched roof. (see links page).
