The Thatcher

Ronan Finn is a qualified Thatcher with a Construction Background in Carpentry and Roofing.

Ronan’s interest in this age old craft started in 1997 when he worked as an apprentice for a Dutch Thatcher for 6 months. When the project finished Ronan moved into Carpentry where he worked for the next 12 years as a Carpenter and Roofer.

Ronan’s Qualifications

In 2008 Ronan secured a place on a FAS Thatcher Traineeship which provided training in practical, theoretical and technical knowledge in Traditional Reed and Straw Thatching. Covering new builds and re-coating in both reed and straw.

In 2009, Ronan started to work on a three-day block release with Thatcher Paul Johnson in the Galway area and after his training with FAS Ronan continued to serve his time with Paul working on roofs in Counties Galway, Mayo and Clare. And on various projects such as Bridget’s Gardens and Moran’s of the Weir.

The Company

After serving a 3 year apprenticeship Ronan went on to set up Finn Thatching Services and has now built up a steady trade of new and repeat business in areas such as: Connamara, Kinvara, Clare, Headford, Mayo and Athlone. His work includes: Heritage Jobs, storm damage repairs, reports for potential buyer, ongoing maintenance, bluestoning, ridges and complete re-roofs.

In early 2017 Ronan did a complete re-thatch on An tSean Cheibh, Kilronan, Inishmore, Aran Islands restoring this amazing building which is now a craft shop to its orignal glory.

Ronan has a strong understanding of traditional thatching methods and he enjoys the hands-on aspect of thatching a roof and the satisfaction that this brings.

As a qualified carpenter with many years roofing experience, Finn Thatching Services can also provide carpentry, building, and other construction services. No job is too big or small.
